Who we are
Roofing & Gutter Ethics is a family owned roofing and gutter company, and most of our team was born and raised right here in the DMV. Together we bring more than 120 years of combined experience to every roof and gutter system we work on.
We work across Northern Virginia and the Fredericksburg area. We get on the roof first, document what we find, and hand you the photos. Sometimes that means telling you the roof is fine and the fix is a two hundred dollar part. We would rather do that than sell you a system you do not need.

The standard
What actually makes a roof last
Warranty years are a marketing claim. What decides whether a roof lasts is the weight of the shingle, the ventilation, the flashing, and whether the installer knows the nail zone. Here is what we specify by default.
- CertainTeed Landmark Pro270 lb per square against 225 for standard Landmark, which is roughly 1,100 lb more material on a typical home, and 130 mph wind rated with the correct starter.
- Synthetic underlayment onlyNever 15 or 30 lb asphalt felt. Ice and water shield goes a full roll at the eave, 24 inches into warm space, plus every valley, wall and protrusion.
- Drip edge at eave and rakeType D, required by Virginia code in both places. It is one of the first things skipped on a cheap quote.
- Matched flashing metalFlashing matched to the gutter metal, never copper against aluminum, because galvanic corrosion will eat the joint from the inside.

The team at Gutter Ethics did a great job with the repair work on my roof. I had recently purchased a house with a 5-year-old roof, that had been installed terribly and was already leaking. John came out the day of the leak and shot me straight on what needed to be fixed and what didn’t. Questions
The questions that actually decide it
Do I need a repair or a full replacement?
Age and extent decide it. A roof under fifteen years old with damage in one area is almost always a repair. Past twenty years with failures in several places, it is usually telling you it is done. We get on the roof, photograph it and show you the evidence, so you are not taking our word for it.
Why is your quote higher than the cheapest one I got?
Because of what is underneath. Our standard is CertainTeed Landmark Pro at about 270 lb per square against 225 for standard, synthetic underlayment rather than felt, and proper drip edge and flashing. A cheap quote saves its money in exactly those places, and none of them are visible once the roof is on. Ask any quote you get to put the shingle line and the metal gauge in writing.
How long does a roof replacement take?
One day for an asphalt roof, tear off through clean up. Slate, cedar, metal and flat systems take longer and you get the real timeline before we start, not after.
Will my insurance cover storm damage?
Sudden damage from hail or wind usually is. Wear from age is not. We document it properly so you can file, and with hail you have roughly a year to get the claim in. We do not discount insurance restoration work and we will never offer to cover your deductible, because that is fraud in Virginia.
Do you do the work yourselves or subcontract it?
Ourselves. We both sell and perform the work, which is unusual in this trade. Most competitors sell the job and hand it to a sub they have never met, and a good share of what we get called out to look at is what those crews left behind.
What actually happens at the free inspection?
We get on the roof and check the whole water path, the surface, the flashing, the ventilation and the gutters, and photograph all of it on CompanyCam. You get the photos and a written number that does not move later. If the roof is fine we tell you it is fine and leave.
