Cheapest fix first
If an extension solves your problem we will tell you that and install it. Buried drainage is real excavation, and it should be reserved for lots where surface discharge genuinely does not work.

A downspout dumping at the corner of the house puts thousands of gallons a year into the soil against your foundation. Buried drainage moves that water underground to a place where it does no damage.
Roof water is the single largest volume of water that hits your lot, and on most homes it gets released within a foot of the wall that is holding the house up.
Surface extensions fix a lot of that for very little money, and we install them first when they will do the job. When the grade runs the wrong way, when the extension crosses a walk or a mowing path, or when the discharge just moves the puddle six feet, the answer is a buried line to daylight, an emitter, or a drywell.

We run rigid PVC with glued fittings on a consistent fall. Corrugated flex pipe sags between the high points, holds water and silt, and freezes solid in the section you cannot reach.
The line has to end somewhere that accepts water. Daylight on a downhill grade, a pop up emitter in the lawn, or a drywell sized to the roof area, chosen by what your lot actually allows.
Every drainage job starts with the lot, not the downspout. Where the water is going to end up decides everything upstream of it, including whether you need a buried line at all.

Sometimes, and honestly not always. If the water is roof water pooling at the foundation, moving it away often solves it. If the cause is groundwater, hydrostatic pressure, or a failed interior system, drainage helps but will not be the whole answer. We tell you which one it looks like.
Far enough to reach a point where the water leaves and stays gone. On a sloped lot that can be twenty feet to daylight. On a flat lot it might be a much longer run to an emitter or a drywell in the low corner. The grade decides that, not a rule of thumb.
They can, mostly with shingle grit and whatever gets past the gutter. That is why we use rigid pipe on real fall and put a cleanout at the connection. A properly built line can be snaked. A sagging corrugated line packed with silt usually cannot.
A line on continuous fall drains itself and has nothing left in it to freeze. Trouble comes from flat spots and sags where water stands, which is why we do not use flexible pipe and why the discharge end gets kept clear of ice buildup.
Often, once we know where it goes. Plenty of homes here have an old line that ends in the yard, feeds a dead drywell, or was cut during landscaping. We locate the end before we connect anything to it, because tying into a blocked line just backs the water up at the house.

A seamless run, a new downspout or a re-pitched trough still fills with leaves, seed pods and shingle grit. Cleaned on a schedule, gutters drain the way they were built to. Every visit we clear each trough by hand, flush every downspout and check the hangers and pitch. We don’t install gutter guards. See why.
