Find the water first
Overflowing gutters, a plugged downspout, missing drip edge or an ice dam. We trace what soaked the board before we replace it.

The fascia board is the trim at the eave that your gutters hang on. When it rots, the gutter sags, water gets into the roof edge behind it, and squirrels find the gap. We replace the rotted board, fix whatever soaked it, and rehang the gutter properly.
Fascia rarely rots on its own. Almost every soft board we pull off was soaked by water coming over the back of a gutter, running behind it because there was no drip edge, or backing up under the shingles from an ice dam, so a new board without a fix for the water only buys a few years.
This page is about the fascia board itself, the vertical board along the eave. If the underside of the overhang needs work too, see fascia and soffit. If the wood is sound and you only want a low maintenance cover, exterior trim wrapping may be all you need, and the sloped gable edges are covered on rake board replacement.

Primed and painted wood suits some older homes and costs less up front. Cellular PVC does not rot and takes paint. We tell you which suits your eave.
The gutter comes down for the work and goes back up with the right slope, screwed hidden hangers and drip edge behind it.
Fascia work means the gutter comes down, and that is the one time anyone gets a clear look at the roof edge. We use it.
Fascia, rake boards, trim, gutters and drip edge work as one system at the roof edge. These pages cover the rest of it.

Peeling paint along the eave, dark streaks below the gutter, a gutter that sags or pulls away, and gaps where animals get in are the usual signs. Press a screwdriver into the board at a corner or below a downspout. If it sinks in, the wood is soft.
Yes, when the rest of the board is sound. We cut back to solid wood, splice in a new section on a backed and sealed joint, and match the profile. If rot runs most of the length, a full board is the better repair.
Yes. The gutter hangs on the fascia, so it comes down for the work and goes back up with proper slope and hangers. If the gutters are old or undersized, it is the cheapest time to replace them.
Often it is worth it. Cellular PVC does not rot, insects ignore it, and it takes paint, so it suits eaves that stay wet or shaded. Painted wood still makes sense on some older homes where the original look matters. We explain both on site.
Usually not. Rot from years of overflowing gutters counts as wear and maintenance. Sudden damage from a fallen limb or a storm can be different, and we photograph whatever we find so you can make that call with your agent.

When a gutter backs up, water spills over the back edge and sits against the fascia, soffit and trim until the wood goes soft. New boards last when the gutter in front of them stays clear. Every cleaning visit includes a look at the roof edge, with photos.
Book a free inspection and we will show you photos of the board, the rafter tails behind it and the roof edge above, then tell you what actually needs replacing.
