Metal that matches
Flashing metal has to match the gutter metal it drains into. Copper against aluminum is a battery, and galvanic corrosion eats the joint from the inside while the surface still looks fine.

Shingles shed water. Flashing handles everywhere the shingles stop, which is why almost every roof leak we chase down ends at a wall, a valley, a pipe, or a chimney rather than out in the open field.
If a contractor tells you the shingles are the problem, ask him what the flashing looks like. That answer is usually where the leak actually lives.
Flashing is the metal that carries water across a joint the shingles cannot cover. Step flashing at a sidewall, counter flashing tucked into the chimney mortar, valley metal, a kickout at the bottom of a wall, and the collar around every pipe. Each one is a small piece of sheet metal doing a job the whole roof depends on, and each one fails in a way we can read.

A sidewall needs individual step pieces woven in with each shingle course. One continuous strip of bent metal caulked along the top is faster to install and guaranteed to leak later.
The last piece where a roof meets a wall has to throw water out into the gutter. Leave it off and every rain dumps behind the siding, which is how a flashing detail becomes a framing repair.
We do not guess and we do not seal over a mystery. We find the entry point, then rebuild that detail so it drains the way it was supposed to in the first place.
Four questions. You get a straight read on whether this is a repair, a replacement, a gutter job or an insurance claim, and where to go next.
We cover Northern Virginia and the Fredericksburg area out of two offices. Search for your town, or pick it off the list to see the map and the local page.
No match in our service area. Call (703) 347-6482 anyway, we travel for larger jobs.
We get on the roof and photograph what we find before we quote. You see the same evidence we do.

Sheet metal that bridges a joint the shingles cannot cover. Walls, valleys, chimneys, skylights, and every pipe coming through the deck all get flashed. It is a small part of the material cost and the largest part of whether the roof leaks.
Usually, yes. We pull the shingle courses around the failure, rebuild the flashing, and reset the shingles. The exception is a roof already at the end of its life, where pulling courses on brittle shingles causes more problems than it solves.
We start where the water shows inside, then work uphill on the roof, because water travels along framing before it drops. Penetrations, wall transitions, and valleys get checked first. We photograph the entry point so you can see it for yourself.
Because caulk is not a flashing detail, it is a way to buy one season. Sealant is meant to back up metal that is already lapped correctly. When it is the only thing holding water out, it fails at the next real freeze.
It should, and on our jobs it does. Reusing old step flashing or bending existing counter flashing back down is the corner cut most often on a tear off, and it is the reason a brand new roof can leak in its first year.
Every town we cover has its own page with local detail. Pick yours.

Clogged gutters back water up under the first course of shingles, rot the fascia and feed ice dams. Keep them clean on a schedule and the roof edge stays dry. Ask about adding the Annual Gutter Cleaning Plan to your roof project.
Free inspection with photos of the actual entry point, and a free written estimate for the repair. We chase the water back to its source before anybody quotes you a number.
Tell us what you are seeing and we will get back to you to set a time.
