Water management first
House wrap, flashing at every window and door head, and a drainage path behind the board. Siding is a rain screen, not a seal. Whatever gets past it needs somewhere to go.

Fiber cement gives you the grain and shadow line of wood without the rot, the insects, or the repainting cycle. It is heavy, it is brittle until it is fastened, and it punishes a sloppy crew.
Fiber cement is a premium siding that behaves nothing like vinyl once it is on the wall, which is exactly why the install matters far more than the brochure does.
The board is cement and cellulose, so it does not burn, feed insects, or move much with temperature. That stability is why paint stays on it for years instead of cracking off. It also means every cut edge, every seam, and every penetration has to be sealed and flashed, because the material will not forgive water that gets in behind it.

Cement does not burn and insects have no interest in it. On a townhouse row or a home built close to the neighbors, that is a practical reason to pick it over wood or vinyl.
Factory finished boards arrive with color baked on and hold it for years. Field paint works too, because the substrate is stable enough that the coating is not fighting a moving surface.
Fiber cement is unforgiving of shortcuts. Fastener depth, the gap at the trim, and clearance at the ground are the three places we see other crews get it wrong.
Four questions. You get a straight read on whether this is a repair, a replacement, a gutter job or an insurance claim, and where to go next.

It is more durable, it does not burn, and it looks far more like real wood. It also costs meaningfully more and takes longer to install because of the weight and the cutting. If you are staying in the house it is usually the better spend. If you are selling soon, vinyl is the honest advice.
Eventually, but nothing like the schedule wood demands. Factory finishes run many years before they need attention, and field paint holds well because the board underneath does not swell and shrink. Repainting fiber cement is a normal maintenance item, not a rescue.
Thirty to fifty years is realistic with basic upkeep, which mostly means washing it and keeping caulk joints intact. The failures we get called to are almost never the board itself. They are water that got in behind an unflashed window or a cut edge sitting in wet mulch.
Yes, and on storm claims that is common. Matching an existing profile and finish across an elevation break is doable while the product is still made. When it is not, we tell you before we start instead of after you are standing there looking at the seam.
That is part of the job. We open it up, look at the sheathing, and address rot, failed wrap, or missing flashing before the new board goes on. It all gets photographed on CompanyCam so you can see what was there, and you keep that link indefinitely.

A clogged gutter dumps water down the face of the house, over siding, window trim and door heads, and into the foundation below. Keeping the gutters clean on a schedule protects the work you just paid for. Cleared by hand, every downspout flushed, photos of the whole roofline.
