Half Round Gutters in Northern Virginia

Half round is the profile older homes were built with, and it drains better than the K style trough that replaced it. It costs more, it looks correct on traditional architecture, and it stays cleaner between visits.

Overview

A half round trough has no square inside corner for grit to sit in, so debris keeps moving toward the outlet instead of packing into a shelf the way it does in a K style gutter.

That is the practical argument. The other one is that half round is what belongs on a colonial, a Victorian, or an architect drawn home, and K style on that fascia reads wrong even to people who cannot say why. We form half round in aluminum for most homes and in copper when the house and the budget call for it.

01

Drains cleaner

The rounded bottom keeps water velocity up across the whole trough. Leaf litter and roof grit ride the flow to the outlet instead of settling into the corner of a flat bottom gutter.

02

Hanger choice matters

Half round hangs on interior hidden hangers or on visible decorative brackets. Brackets are period correct on older homes. Hidden hangers disappear. Both get spaced for our snow and ice loads, not for a catalog photo.

03

Round downspouts

A half round system takes round downspouts. They pass debris better than a rectangular spout, which tends to jam at the elbow, and they finish the look the trough starts.

What we actually do

Half round is formed and hung differently than K style, and getting it wrong shows from the street. Here is how the work runs on a typical Northern Virginia home.

  • Material and sizeAluminum half round in five or six inch, or copper when the home warrants it. Six inch with the right outlet count is what most large roofs in this area actually need to keep up with a Virginia thunderstorm.
  • Slope and outletsWe set fall toward every outlet and place outlets by drainage area, using the 6.5 inch per hour design rainfall the state sizes to. Long runs get an outlet at each end instead of one in the middle.
  • Matched metalsHangers, brackets, and any flashing that touches the gutter get matched to the gutter metal. Copper against aluminum corrodes at the contact point, and we never mix the two regardless of what is already on the house.
  • Water test and photosBefore the ladders come down we run water through every run and watch the outlets. The whole job, including the fascia condition we found underneath, goes on CompanyCam and you get the link.

    What Virginia homeowners say

    Questions

Half Round Gutters questions we get asked

Is half round better than K style?

It drains cleaner and it looks right on traditional homes. K style holds more water per foot at the same face height and it costs less. If your house is a newer colonial with existing K style trim, half round is a style decision. On an older or custom home it is usually the correct one.

Do half round gutters clog less?

They clog less often, but they still clog. Nothing sitting under a tree line stays clear on its own. The rounded trough keeps material moving toward the outlet, so what you tend to get is a slow buildup rather than a packed shelf holding standing water.

Can I get half round in aluminum instead of copper?

Yes, and most of our half round installs are aluminum. You get the profile, the round downspouts, and the drainage behavior at a cost much closer to standard gutters. Copper is the upgrade if you want the material to outlive the roof above it.

Will half round work with gutter guards?

We don’t install gutter guards on any profile. Half round drains well when it is kept clean. Here is why we skip guards.

Do I need new fascia to switch profiles?

Not usually, but we check. Switching from K style to half round changes where the load sits and exposes any soft spot in the fascia board. If we find rot we show you the photos and price the board work separately from the gutter itself.

    Keep them working

New gutters only work if they stay clean.

A seamless run, a new downspout or a re-pitched trough still fills with leaves, seed pods and shingle grit. Cleaned on a schedule, gutters drain the way they were built to. Every visit we clear each trough by hand, flush every downspout and check the hangers and pitch. We don’t install gutter guards. See why.
