Fix the roof edge too
New rake trim without drip edge and a proper shingle overhang rots again. We correct both while the edge is open.

Rotted rake boards and cornice returns replaced on Springfield gables, with drip edge installed along the rake and the roof edge sealed back down. Served from our headquarters on Alban Station Blvd.
The colonials and split levels that fill Springfield neighborhoods have plenty of gable ends, and many still wear their original rake trim. On a lot of those roofs the shingles were cut flush with the edge and no drip edge was ever installed, so every wind driven rain runs straight down the face of the board and into the corner at the bottom.
We see the same pattern from North Springfield to West Springfield: paint failing along the top of the rake, a soft spot at the cornice return, and sometimes a gap at the peak where birds or squirrels have moved in. The fix is the board, the drip edge and the overhang together.

Cornice returns are rebuilt where they are soft and capped with metal so their flat tops stop holding water.
Openings at the top of the gable are sealed so birds and squirrels cannot get into the attic.

Usually because water runs down the face of the board instead of dripping clear of it. Shingles cut flush with the edge, no drip edge, and flat topped cornice returns with no cap are the usual causes on Springfield homes.
Yes. We remove the wrap, replace any soft wood and either rewrap it or install cellular PVC that does not need covering. Wrapping soft wood again only hides the rot.
Usually not. The edge shingles along the gable can be lifted and reset with a proper overhang once the new board and drip edge are on.
